According to Xinhua News Agency, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced on the 2nd that the first batch of green methanol made from urban waste in China has completed the refueling operation of the first domestically produced methanol dual fuel container ship “COSCO Shipping Yangpu” at Yangpu Port in Hainan.
Green methanol is produced by CNOOC Chemical Co., Ltd., using biogas produced from the fermentation of urban kitchen waste, animal manure, and other waste as raw materials. This refueling operation was completed using a “land ship” method, achieving the first green methanol refueling of the first domestically produced dual fuel (methanol+diesel) ship in a domestic port.
Currently, the global shipping industry is accelerating its green transformation, and green methanol has broad application prospects and market space. Compared with traditional fossil fuels such as diesel, the 200 tons of green methanol added this time can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 325 tons, which is equivalent to the carbon sequestration effect of planting more than 19000 trees. Wu Hongsheng, the leader of the Green Methanol Working Group of CNOOC Chemical, stated that the successful injection of green methanol marks a crucial step in promoting the transformation of domestic shipping fuels from traditional energy to green energy.
