Recently,Finnish and Swedish power companies announced plans related to nuclear hydrogen production.Previously,Fortum,a Finnish company,announced the construction of a hydrogen production test plant near the Loviza nuclear power plant,while OKG,a Swedish company,signed a contract with Hynion to supply hydrogen produced by the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant to its refueling station.
Since 1992,OKG has been using electricity produced by the Oskar Port Nuclear Power Plant in Finland to produce hydrogen through electrolysis of water.These hydrogen gases were originally intended to meet the needs of the nuclear power plant itself,but after the permanent shutdown of Oskar Port Units 1 and 2 in June 2017 and December 2016,Unit 3 was unable to absorb all the hydrogen,resulting in overcapacity.OKG has modernized the hydrogen production plant and signed contracts to supply hydrogen to other users.
